Websites that is responsive and adaptive.

What is an adaptive responsive website? Today’s world is full of monitor sizes and handheld devices that come in all shapes and sizes, and if it you thought it couldn’t get any worse think again. More and more household appliances like refrigerators, coffee tables, flat screen TV’s and washing machines are also coming out with screens that connect to the internet.

This poses a number of challenging obstacles for website design and website development. Statistics all so show that more people own mobile devices than a desk top computer and that most internet surfing done these days is on handheld devices just because they are more affordable accessible and convenient. This has seen an explosion apps and new technologies like augmented reality for hand held devices. Websites, however have also had to adapt to all these changes which have come fast and furious, making a big impact on the web design world. The way websites are now designed and developed has changed in a real big way. Website developers have to take all sizes into consideration when designing and developing a website making sure that all the design elements of the website will have the following functionality on all devices.

  • The design elements must look the same or similar on all devices and sometimes this is overcome by having variations of the website for various devices. This is almost always done with the slide show as the desktop version of a slideshow with text would never scale on a hand held device to the point where the text on the slideshow would be visible. This problem is overcome by creating two slideshows for the website with the variant slideshow being used for smaller handheld devices but hidden on large screens.

  • The form and function of the website must also be similar with all information available and video accessible image visible and legible text. The site should also respond to the rotation of the device and adapt appropriately. If you have a flash site, you pretty stuffed because flash is not supported on mobile devices and is going the same way as the dinosaurs.

  • Website navigation is also something to be considered as all menus that are available on desktop versions of the website also need to be visible and usable on small handheld devices.

All of the above has to be considered when designing and developing a website to responsive and adaptive on devices of all shapes and sizes.
